The South African Weather Service issued a warning pertaining to veld fires, for areas around Hammanskraal, Nokeng Tsa Taemane/Cullinan, Pelindaba and Pretoria in Tshwane.
Residents are forewarned of very dangerous conditions relating to veld/grass fires that pose a huge risk of becoming run away fires that might destroy property at farms and small holdings as well as livelihood.
The warning said people should be careful especially during these strong, windy and dry conditions that are expected to be with us for quite some time. Veld fires spread rapidly during windy conditions and the public, especially those who live in thatched-roof houses or have thatched lapas close to open fields, should clean up the areas around their property.
When any roadway or freeway is engulfed by smoke, motorists are urged to-
reduce speed and switch on hazard lights to warn the oncoming traffic; and close the car windows and air inlets to prevent smoke inhalation. Extinguish all open fires once you leave an area. Special care must be taken when you make use of heating agents to warm up the household.
Special precautions should be taken when using heaters to warm your house or your environment. Make sure that heaters are placed safely away from any burning agent, and switch them off once you go to bed. Never leave any heating agent unattended or without supervision for some time. It should be noted that no person is allowed to set fire to grass. Arson is a criminal offence.
All fires must be reported to the Emergency Services as soon as they are noticed. Delays might lead to serious damage and even loss of life.
