The City of Tshwane Mayoral Cup Tournament 2015 came to an end after three weeks of action-packed games. The finals took place at the Temba Sports Ground on Saturday, 27 June 2015.

Despite the very windy and cold weather conditions, the twenty teams that made it to the final round of the tournament came to claim their position in the championship title. The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Cllr Nozipho Makeke warmly welcomed everyone to the stadium and emphasised that the City of Tshwane in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA) in Tshwane, and the Mamelodi Sundowns family were proud of the progress and all the outcomes of the tournament thus far.

Cllr Makeke said that Patrice Motsepe, the founder and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, and the City of Tshwane share the same vision and goals – to produce professional soccer players in the team that will represent South Africa in the continent. The tournament is one of the initiatives of the city, to ignite excellence and develop football among the poorest of the poor in Tshwane. She acknowledged the presence of Chinedu Okolo who is a product of the Mayoral Tournament. His soccer career was uplifted in 2009 when he was selected from the Mayoral Cup to form part of the U/12 team representing the City of Tshwane at the International Tournament in South Korea. As a token of appreciation, Chinedu presented Cllr Makeke with his unique branded soccer ball as a gift. This year the tournament consisted of five age groups: under 11, under 13, -15, -17 and -19. Teams which achieved first place received 25 gold medals, a trophy and prize money, and the runners-up went away with 25 silver medals and prize money.

The prize money was as follows:

The under-11 winners received R5 000
The under-11 runners-up received R2 500
The under-13 winners’ prize money was R7 500
The under-13 runners-up went home with R3 000

The City of Tshwane, together with SAFA Tshwane and Mamelodi Sundowns, congratulates the winning teams. We plead for the parents of the young players who participated in the tournament to support them.
