The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, MP officially welcomed the first and newly appointed Community Education and Training (CET) Colleges Council members at the Inauguration Ceremony that took place on Saturday, 05 September 2015 at the Premier Hotel O.R Tambo in Kempton Park, Gauteng.
The Department of Higher Education and Training has established nine Community Colleges which are now responsible for the administration and management of the merged three thousand two hundred and seventy six (3 276) erstwhile Adult Education and Training Centres, which are known as Community Learning Centres. Minister Nzimande said not since the establishment of universities and the erstwhile Technikons and Technical Colleges has there been a completely new form of a public education and training institution in South Africa; “this is the first new institutional form in the post-Apartheid South Africa and specifically targets Adult Learners,” he said.
