The Minister for Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa and the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa on Tuesday, 15 September 2015 launched the National Heritage Monument at the Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

The National Heritage Monument is situated on the Groenkloof Reserve which is in itself part of the national heritage and include 400 life bronze statues of Pre-colonial, Colonial and Anti-Apartheid struggle heroes and heroines. The manner in which the statues are placed is known as the Long Walk to Freedom which is the site’s most significant element because it is seen as South Africa’s intangible cultural heritage foundation.

The Monument is an iconic attraction that celebrates South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy. The National Heritage Monument is a heritage site that epitomizes intangible aspects of inherited culture, a culture that will tell the South African story, share the diversity of the country and propel the ideals of working towards nation building and social cohesion.

Minister Mthethwa unveiled the first 56 life size bronze statues of the 400 which are part of South Africa’s cultural heritage landscape.
