A sexual assault case could not go ahead today at the Temba Magistrate Court because of a missing adult sexual evidence kit.
The kit went missing on 03 June 2014 at the Temba police station under the supervision of a police officer who was working a day shift on that day and was responsible for the keys to the safe where the adult sexual assault kit evidence was locked up.
It came out in court that the missing adult sexual evidence kit of the accused was the only missing evidence from all the other sexual evidence kits stored in the safe.
During cross examination, the magistrate stated that the Police Officer contradicted her earlier statements resulting in the prosecution requesting that the police officer should bring the log book used for handing over keys to the safe where fire arms and crucial evidence is kept.
The accused will remain in custody while investigations continue with another SAPS Officer who works at the at the SAPS laboratory, who stated that the evidence kit came to the laboratory to be checked and a full report about the kit was made before it disappeared.
