Residents of Hammanskraal, Tambo, said the city of Tshwane is failing to deliver services in the area compared to other areas. Complaints ranged from lack of proper roads, failure to collect waste, stoppage of water unannounced and apollo lights that are not working.
A resident of Tambo, Mr Thipe Letlokwe, said he has five tenets and the garbage combined accumulated over four weeks is unbearable.
“This thing is affecting us in a bad way because we cannot be treated like this, in other areas waste is collected weekly, but here, we have not seen them in the past four weeks, “ he said.
Another resident, Ms Lucy Mabena, also added that their area lack development, roads have potholes and every time the municipality report that there is a budget and that our roads will be fixed but that never happens.
A learner, Mpho Setlhare, said sometimes they wake up without water to wash because of the unannounced water stoppage which means going to school without having a bath.
City of Tshwane released a statement siting protest action as a cause of the service delivery challenges in region 1 and 2. The City has since enlisted the services of the Tshwane Metropolitan Police and the South African Police Service to escort waste collection trucks in order to ensure continuation of services.
“The community must understand that the City is committed to provide them with better service delivery while we are dealing with all these challenges.” Said the MMC of Environmental Management, Cllr Michael Mkhari
The community however is on week four of no service delivery even after this promise.
