The youth of ward 74 in Hammanskraal has taken it upon themselves to assist the elderly who que for the better part of the day at pension pay points.
Pensioners who receive their money at the South African Methodist church at Temba Rockville are given soft porridge and bread in the morning to fill their stomach while they are queuing for their money.
The youth said they took the initiative to provide pensioners with free breakfast every time they come to collect their pension money.
One of the youth who is their chairperson, Mr Thabang Mkhize, said they are doing all this out of love, “pensioners leave their homes early when coming to collect their money and they spend almost all day here and some of them are diabetic. “We are doing this through donations from community members especially shop owners,” He said.
Pensioners, Ms Sarah Mpete, said she is grateful to what the youth is doing for them” we stand long ques for hours waiting for money, and some of us need to eat to get strength to beat diabetes, “ she said.
The good works started last year March when they were proving breakfast to two areas in Temba but due to lack of capital to purchase goods, they are now proving for one centre.
The youth said they belong to the ANC youth league of ward 74 in Temba.
