The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Thulas Nxesi, handed over an environmental friendly multipurpose sport court at Makgetse High School in Temba, Hammanskraal on Wednesday 28 June.
The new multipurpose court hosts five different sports, includes tennis, volley ball, netball, basketball and mini soccer.
Minister Nxesi said the facility should be used to remove youth from the streets and for the development of sports in the community.
“Without a development program at school level, our national teams would not compete at international level, this has to start here.” he said.
He added that every South African child deserves to be given a sport facility to discover themselves because sports can be an alternative career and children should not be denied that opportunity to find themselves.
Principal of Makgetse Secondary, Ms Magdeline Kgotle, said the school is grateful to be the first in the area to receive this special gift from the Department of Sports and Recreation.
“The facility is one of its kind and we commit to take special care of it,” she said.
Refilwe Mathupa a grade 12 pupil and a Netball prayer who plays goalkeeper said she is happy to be afforded the opportunity of now having a netball court, “I would now be able to play the sport that I love in a professional and beautiful netball facility,” she said.
