Salt is an important part of cooking as it makes our food tasty, enjoyable and adds flavour. This mineral that is scientifically known as sodium, is good when used in moderation during the cooking process to season our food. We however tend to add way too much salt in our food to an extent that it turns into an addiction that leads to even using it raw on our food.

As much as this mineral is loved, it can also be dangerous to our health when we over use it. This is worse particularly for people living with diseases such as diabetics, hypertension and high blood pressure because consuming too much salt or raw salt can cause unnecessary diseases including swollen feet due to access salt in the body.  The access salt also increases cholesterol, which makes it dangerous for people managing their cholesterol levels.

Whether you are treating a certain condition or not, it is still not wise to consume a lot of salt especially when it is raw. It is much better to use herbs and spices to flavour food and add taste because there are health benefits such as lowering the blood glucose when using spices such as cumin and cinnamon.

In the olden days, people used God given healthy herbs and spices to cook because they believed in the gifts of nature. This is also good for our bodies as the risk of getting unnecessary illness from salt. Because of this God given gifts, we do not have a reason to damage our bodies.

We also hear of the product called Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), that is used mostly in Asian cooking. MSG is similar to salt but it is worse. It has however become popular to use MSG for cooking in the Asian cuisine to an extent that it has become almost necessary to add it to the Asian cooking each time.

The reality is that this habits destroy the functioning of our body, slows down the digestive system and weakens the immune system. We need to do our best to be informed about such habits because we might discover late that our eating habits are a danger to our lives.

It all starts with making the right choices around flavoring our food and limiting our salt intake. Life is worth living, so let us start by making the right choices, use salt responsibly and look for healthy alternative in herbs and spices.
