Hammanskraal grannies improve their health and well being through soccer

The Gauteng Department of Sports and Recreation has introduced Golden Games to elderly people in Hammanskraal with the aim to improve their health and wellbeing.

The Games started in 2014 and so far it has benefited many grannies to regain their strength.

Ms Fredah Seshai (70), the head coach of Golden Game 21 said the reason they have introduced elderly people into sport was to reduce the risks illness.

“As we get old, we lose our sense of balance, strength and coordination and it increases the risks of sugar diabetes, arthritis and other lifestyle deceases due to lack of exercise,” Ms Seshai said.

The team has a formal football training schedule with a dedicated coach every Wednesday from 10 to 11 at Mandela Stadium.

“Soccer has benefited me a lot, especially in terms of my health. I had arthritis before joining the team and now it has vanished. I can now work in my garden without hiring a garden boy and also have the strength similar to that of a young person,” said Ms Alami Setshedi (75).
