Friends and family attended the memorial service of Nkele Martha Laka today held at Sebothoma Hall in Temba to honor her.
Ms Laka, who was a social sciences and mathematics teacher at Paleseng primary school in Temba, succumbed to cancer last Friday 19 July 2019 after suffering from breast cancer that had spread.
Ms Lebogang Boikanyane, the aunt to Ms Laka, said the late is leaving behind her two young daughters Onewang (14) and Omphemetse (9) “and that has saddened the family to see her leaving behind her children so young”.
Chairperson of Sadtu Holaganang Branch, Comrade Tsoai G, said it is a big blow to the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) to lose just one teacher.
“We are living in critical days where we are losing teachers daily, last week we lost one from Holaganag branch and one from Temba branch. This is becoming a reality that we are losing teachers while the younger generation is not interested in the profession.
“Teachers are the most important people in society because everyone who is educated must have had a teacher involved in their life.
“In Nkele we have lost a teacher, a mother, a friend, and a comrade, her legacy will live on among us,” he said.
The funeral service for Ms Laka will be held on Saturday 27 July 2019 at 07:00 at Sinoville Methodist Church and she will be interred at Voeting in Radium.
