Miss Tebatso Gina Mohape from Mathibastad is passionate about helping young girl retain their dignity. She was touched when she saw a Facebook post about girls from Motswadimeng High School who were in need of sanitary pads.
When she got in touch with a teacher from the school, the teacher disclosed that the situation is dire for the learners because some of them use face cloths and tissue paper as pads.
This is what triggered her to start the project to collect sanitary pads last year.
“I decided to start looking for funding and at first it was not easy but as I continued to share on social media the need to support the learners, Absa Bank responded positively and agreed to fund the project,” she said.
She ordered pads from Palesa Pads for their largest packages, two panties, pad hangers, a bucket, washing powder and a sterilizer.
She started giving out the pads last year to three schools, Motswadimeng High School, Letlopi High School and Letlapi High School and during Valentine’s Day, they donated to Sekitla High School and Sembapa High School.
“I am thinking of expanding our reach to Soweto, Mamelodi and Soshanguve schools soon so that we can help as many girls as we can for them to stay in school.
“We are also expanding to cover boy needs by distributing roll-ons, hand sanitizer, diary, water bottles and a pen from Absa,” Ms Mohape said.
