City supports households in Hammanskraal to commemorate World Food Day

City of Tshwane (CoT), partnered with the Angels of Glory NGO and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, to celebrate World Food Day on 14 October 2021 in Hammanskraal by providing households with food parcels, garden tools, and seedlings to establish food gardens.

World Food Day is celebrated annually 0n 16 October to promote global awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and to highlight the need to ensure a healthy diet for all. This year’s World Food Day is the second of its kind and is commemorated while countries around the world deal with the widespread effects of the Covid 19 pandemic.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management, Cllr Dana Wannenburg, said It is estimated that 213 000 households in Tshwane are in need of food daily, presenting a strategic challenge to the City in having to fulfill its mandate as a City that cares for the wellbeing of its residents.

“Smallholder farmers have an important role to play in the food systems; they possess the power to increase production through food availability and accessibility, they protect the environment, promote food security and nutrition, and create a better life for all,” he said.
