Financial services company African Bank, in partnership with Bank of China, is improving critical classroom infrastructure at Motshegofadiwa Primary School in Mokone Block, Stinkwater in Hammanskraal.

Both institutions entered this partnership because the Banks believe that infrastructure is essential for quality education and that the quality of infrastructure has a significant impact on learning outcomes.

Edna Montse, Group Chief Transformation and Sustainability at African Bank. said well-built classrooms provide learners with a safe, comfortable and well-equipped environment in which to learn effectively.

“The value of education for the youth cannot be underestimated, especially as the country commemorates and celebrates Youth Month. Over and above the building of the five additional classrooms at the school, African Bank will also provide eye tests and hearing aids to learners who require them, while affording teacher development and curriculum support.

“We are so happy to be a part of this project, particularly at a school in an area that seldom gets attention,” he said.

The school had classrooms built with mud,  a task that the parents of the school had taken upon themselves.

“By building proper classrooms, we are showing our young people that we care about them and their future and want to offer dignity to our people. As African Bank, we pride ourselves on being a bank for the people, by the people and serving the people,” Mr Montse said.

The project has also helped to empower the local community and create job opportunities; a significant achievement in this sluggish economy.

“The builders, health and safety officers and the project leaders are from the community itself. Not only does this provide employment, but the skills and experience they will gain will contribute to expanding their CVs for future opportunities,” he added.

Commenting on the power of private sector partnerships, specifically referencing the collaboration with the Bank of China, MR Montse said, “This project has brought together two great financial sector brands that could make a valuable impact on a community that needs investment, and empower that community also. Collaboration among stakeholders, particularly businesses, Government and non-profit organisations, is necessary to promote socio-economic growth in addressing our current challenges.”
