Telkom, a leading telecommunications company, has announced a strategic partnership with Delivery Ka Speed, a Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) 100% black youth-owned, township-based fast food delivery service. The collaboration aims to enhance Telkom’s presence in the township market by leveraging Delivery Ka Speed’s expertise and reach.
Delivery Ka Speed, located in Hammanskraal, is strategically positioned to serve the townships of Gauteng, Limpopo, and the North West province. The company has a proven track record of delivering to underserviced areas with unmapped streets, addressing a significant challenge in these regions.
Dr Mmaki Jantjies, Group Executive of Innovation and Transformation at Telkom, highlighted that the partnership with Delivery Ka Speed aligns with Telkom’s broader strategy of establishing connectivity touchpoints within townships. This move aims to meet the growing demand for digital products and services driven by the adoption of a digital-first lifestyle.
To support Delivery Ka Speed’s expansion plans, Telkom’s FutureMakers initiative has donated 10 new delivery bikes valued at R300,000. In addition, Telkom sponsored airtime worth R10,000 to contribute to empowering entrepreneurship in underserved communities.
Dr Jantjies emphasized the significance of the donation, stating that the bikes will play a crucial role in helping Delivery Ka Speed fulfil its vision of providing convenience to the township market and fostering work opportunities for unemployed youth.
The acquisition of the delivery bikes will enable Delivery Ka Speed to expand its operations into neighbouring townships across the provinces. The company plans to establish a new revenue stream by hiring local unemployed youth through a “rent-to-own” agreement with independent delivery partners.
Telkom FutureMakers, whose primary mission is to cultivate the digital economy by investing in and nurturing high-growth enterprises owned by black entrepreneurs, sees this partnership as a means to generate substantial job opportunities and economic outcomes within township communities.
This initiative is part of Telkom FutureMakers’ comprehensive supply and sales value chain strategy, which aims to support SMEs, establish broadband leadership, and mitigate supply chain risks within the Telkom Group.
Dr Jantjies added that the township economy thrives on entrepreneurship, and the partnership with Delivery Ka Speed reflects Telkom’s commitment to nurturing local enterprises while ensuring digital accessibility. Through this collaboration, Telkom aims not only to enhance connectivity but also to build brand affinity, community trust, and economic resilience within townships.
Delivery Ka Speed, founded by the youth of Hammanskraal in July 2021, operates on a gig economy model that allows local unemployed youth to participate as independent delivery partners.
Godiragetse Mogajane, Founder and CEO of Delivery Ka Speed, expressed gratitude for the partnership, noting that it significantly reduces the financial burden for young entrepreneurs and makes owning and operating delivery bikes more attainable. Mr Mogajane sees the collaboration with Telkom FutureMakers and Telkom Consumer Service Business (CSB) Retail as a stepping stone towards a brighter future for the youth.
The partnership between Telkom, Delivery Ka Speed, Telkom FutureMakers, and CSB goes beyond commerce. It creates an ecosystem that leverages the township’s potential, fosters self-sustainability, and paves the way for a digital future.
Together, Telkom FutureMakers, CSB, and Delivery Ka Speed exemplify the transformative power of collaborative innovation in driving economic growth and connectivity.
