Mogogelo, North West – In a heartwarming gesture, the Moretele Local Municipality will hand over the keys to a brand new four-room house to the destitute Mokone family in Mogogelo Village on July 18th, 2024.
The Mokone family, consisting of eight members, has endured years of hardship, forced to share a single shack that served as their kitchen, dining room, bedroom, and bathroom. None of the family members is employed, relying solely on government grants and donations from friends and neighbours to survive.
The family’s plight was compounded by the fact that the eldest member, 37-year-old Mercia, is wheelchair-bound. She lives with her three siblings, aged 24, 18, and 25, as well as three children between the ages of 5 and 10, and a nephew.
Moretele Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Masango George Manyike expressed the council’s commitment to prioritizing the needs of child-headed families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Since his installation as mayor, he and the council have donated over 10 houses as part of the Mayoral program.
“I have been staying in this shack with my family members for years,” said an emotional Mercia. “I tried to apply for an RDP house but couldn’t succeed. I cannot wait to receive a new house and sleep inside it.”
The official handing over of the house will take place on Mandela Day July 18th, 2024, in Mogogelo.
“Remember, sharing is caring,” said the Communication Manager at the Municipality, Mr Mothupi Malebye, emphasizing the municipality’s dedication to uplifting and providing for the needs of the less fortunate in their community.
