Co-created with South African youth, JiK’iZinto is a groundbreaking movement representing a generation determined to overcome the challenges they face today.

The youth of Hammanskraal, stand to benefit significantly from this initiative. By engaging with JiK’iZinto’s empowering projects, local young people can find inspiration and motivation to embrace their potential, access vital information, and foster a sense of community.

Backed by Girl Effect, an international non-profit organization, JiK’iZinto aims to inspire and equip young people to make informed life choices through a holistic approach that leverages music, multimedia content, and accessible digital platforms.

In South Africa, young people are confronted with profound obstacles. In 2024, the employment absorption rate for young men was 31.9%, while young women lagged at just 24.2%. Alarmingly, the unemployment rate among young women soared to 49.4%, a significant increase from 46.1% in 2004. Among the 15-24 age group, using the “expanded” definition of unemployment, 60.7% were officially unemployed by late 2023, with only a slight decline to 39.8% among those aged 25-34.

Thandiwe McCloy of JiK’iZinto stated that these statistics reflect the real, lived experiences of millions of South African youth, especially women. She emphasized that JiK’iZinto exists to tackle these challenges head-on, empowering young people with the knowledge, resources, and tools they need to rise above barriers and create their own futures. The movement aims to instill hope, provide practical support, and foster resilience—particularly among young women who are often hardest hit by systemic issues such as unemployment and socio-economic inequality.

JiK’iZinto has several key initiatives aimed at empowering South Africa’s youth. One of the standout projects is the anthemic track “Iskhath’ Sam Manje,” which features some of the country’s hottest talents, including DJ KMAT, Dee Koala, and Boohle. This empowering anthem is designed to inspire and energize young people, serving as a rallying cry that emphasizes this is their time. It is set to launch on 20th September across all digital streaming platforms.

In addition to the music, JiK’iZinto has produced a four-episode web series that showcases the diverse lives of young South Africans. This series features figures such as rapper Dee Koala, content creator Barbara Moagi, youth activist Amonge Sinxoto, and comedian Khanyisa Unfiltered, each sharing pivotal moments that inspired them to “Be the First to JiK’iZinto.”

Another exciting initiative is the TV series “DiChipi,” a comedy-drama that follows three unlikely friends as they navigate the challenges that arise after a chaotic night jeopardizes their community centre’s future. The series not only highlights themes of self-discovery and growth but also includes celebrity cameos and breakout stars.

To further support young people, JiK’iZinto has developed a low-data, mobile-friendly web application. This platform provides reliable, youth-friendly information on various topics, including mental well-being, career advice, and sexual and reproductive health, ensuring that essential resources are easily accessible.

“We understand that it’s difficult to break cycles and create change, but we believe Mzansi youth have the bravery to do so. JiK’iZinto is here to support them with the tools they need to make that change a reality,” said Lebo Leitch, Create Lead at Girl Effect, a global not-for-profit organization that uses media and technology to unlock the potential of girls. With a focus on adolescent girls and young women, Girl Effect aims to help them overcome barriers and unleash their full potential through behaviour change and empowering content.

“JiK’iZinto is a reminder that we have the power within us to create change. It’s about empowering ourselves with knowledge, confidence, and support so we can overcome challenges and achieve our goals,” added Boohle, South African artist.

JiK’iZinto aims to help young people move beyond the limitations imposed by their circumstances and society, supporting them in rewriting their futures.
