The Hammanskraal Tennis Club members showcased their talent and dedication at the recent Community Sports and Recreation Awards, where they were honored as finalists. Although they did not take home the top prize, being recognized as a finalist is a significant achievement, highlighting the club’s commitment to promoting sports and recreation in the community.

Representing the club at the awards were Selina Noko, Doris Makgatho, known affectionately as Koko wa bana, junior player Tshenolo Letsapa, and Lambard Kutumela. Their presence at the event reflects the club’s spirit and unity as they continue to inspire each other and the local community through their passion for tennis.

Ms Mpho Makhobo from the Hammanskraal Tennis Club clinched the prestigious Technical Official of the Year Award in a remarkable turn. Makhobo made history by becoming the first black female in Africa to achieve a Silver Badge Chief of Umpires qualification, a distinction awarded under the joint certification of the ATP, ITF, and WTA. She is only the fourth person worldwide to reach this milestone.

In her acceptance speech, Ms Makhobo expressed her gratitude, stating, “This is a humbling moment for me. I dedicate this award to the Hammanskraal Tennis Club for encouraging me to do more. I also thank my family for their support, the HTC coaches, Tennis South Africa, and especially my late brother, Daniel Makhobo, who always believed in my dreams.”

Makhobo’s victory not only brings pride to Hammanskraal but also automatically qualifies the club for the SA Sports Awards 2025, further elevating its profile in the sports community.

Ms Makhoba said, “As the Hammanskraal Tennis Club reflects on these achievements, we remain committed to promoting talent and the love of tennis among our members and the broader community.
