In a unique effort to encourage Nyaope users to kick the habit, Moretele Local Municipality Speaker, Councillor Freda Mapela, celebrated her birthday with hundreds of Nyaope addicts around Mathibestad and Makapanstad yesterday. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote community participation in addressing this societal problem.
According to Mapela, “Drug abuse is a painful situation for parents and families, watching their loved ones struggle without hope.” She emphasized the need for community involvement, saying, “Drug abuse is a societal problem that requires community participation.”
The celebration took place yesterday at the Makapanstad Butcher Sebele Shop, where Kgosi Nchaupe, the Mayor, Single Whip, and other councilors joined Mapela and hundreds of Nyaope addicts. Some survivors shared their testimonies, providing a platform for inspiration and hope.
Mapela has a history of using her birthday celebrations to give back to the community. Last year, she distributed sanitary towels and school shoes to those in need at Dipetloane village.
Mothupi Malebye, spokesperson for the Moretele Communication Unit, said, “The event was a huge success, and we appreciate the community’s participation in this important initiative.”
