Unemployed youth of Marokolong in Hammanskraal have resorted to illegal fishing to provide for their families.
They say they refuse to let the high rate of unemployment get in their way and have resorted to finding ways to fend for themselves and it can be better if the municipality could recognize this and licence this income generating activity.
One of the fishers, said this is an opportunity to use the natural resource they have to curb unemployment.
He told Moretele Times that Temba Beach has created employment for him as he catches fish that he sells to earn income for himself and his family.
“I decided to buy fishing nets so that I could fish in this river and sell fish to the community.
“I am able to provide for my family through the fishing business, if I arrive early, I can catch up to ten fish in a day,” he said.
He further told Moretele Times that most of his clients are white people who drive pass the R101 near his place.
“They like the Cradle fish that we normally call Krepolo in township slang. One Cradle ranges from R50 to R80 based on their size. But in the community they normally buy Baboro and Kapa as they are the cheapest.” Said Chauke.
Mr Chauke said the youth should be encouraged to engage in income generating activities through licencing such businesses in the area to reduce unemployment.
