Justice and Correctional Services Deputy Minister, Mr Thabang Makwetla, handed over 20 manual wheelchairs to the people living with disability in Hammanskraal Mandela Village today.
The wheelchairs were assembled by inmates, as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration efforts towards repairing the harm caused against society.
Members of the community together with councilors of Hammanskraal came out in numbers to witness the goodness being done to people living with disability.
One of the primary missions of corrections is to develop and implement correctional programmes that balance the concepts of deterrence, incapacitation and rehabilitation for individuals in correctional facilities.
Mr Makwetla said “We are here today to stay relevant to the vision of building our country as a caring and humane one. We must not forget where we come from as a country and we should continue to build peaceful communities.
“The struggle is not always about water, it is also about lack of jobs and we hope the wheelchairs will allow the disabled to be able to move around and be able to join the South African labour force.
One of the beneficiaries who used walking sticks said she is thankful to have been given the wheelchair because she was unable to walk properly because the walking sticks were hurting.
“May God bless the department,” she said.
