Complaints of mistreatment of learners at Dominican Deaf School which is a boarding school in Hammanskraal are under investigation by the Department of Education.

Community members claim that the school does not care for the learners properly and that there is poor communication between the school and parents.

Recently a parent posted a picture of a child who is allegedly from the school who was injured on the head and admitted to Jubilee hospital but the mother alleged that she was only informed the next day.

It is also alleged that there is a child who committed suicide in the past and the parents were allegedly kept in the dark about the matter and were informed after three days.

There is also allegations of beatings between learners, rape by older learners and allegedly little is done about it.

Community members have also took to social media posting on Facebook complaining about the lack of proper care by the caregivers which resulted in parents taking a stand to report the school to the Department of Education.

Two sources at the school who requested to remain anonymous for fear of victimization confirmed that the claims of the community are true.

“Children are not treated properly here and we cannot do or say much because we are scared we might lose our jobs,” they said.

The principal at the school refused to respond to the allegation and instead refered us to the Department of Educations.

Questions were sent to Mr Steve Mabona of the Gauteng Department of Education and at the time of going to press, he had not responded.
