The athletics team, Sports Development in Hammanskraal, is growing by leaps and bounds. From only four children registered in 2016, the team has grown to 42 kids enrolled to date.
This is after coach, Samuel Mashishi, who is a professional athlete himself, managed to register 27 kids licenses with Athletics South Africa for this year. This encouraged other kids to join his team in January growing the Sports Development in Hammanskraal Athletics Team to 42 kids registered.
The team was started by Mr Mashishi back in 2016 with the purpose of keeping kids busy and getting them off the streets where they faced the danger of being exposed to alcohol and drugs.
On 19 December 2019 Mr Mashishi organized an award ceremony for a loyalty challenge program where 27 kids received certificates, trophies and goody bags.
Mr Mashishi said this means he is going to need more sponsors but said he would like to thank Unica Iron and Steel Company from Babelegi for sponsoring the team with races and transport since 2018.
He also thanked Murray and Roberts Athletics Club in Johannesburg for helping with old running shoes for the kids and the 2020 licenses.
“I would also like to thank each and of the members of the community for helping with the kids, Mr Kenneth Tlhaole for buying six pairs of new running shoes and Moretele Community Radio for putting up the updates.
“I am passionate about the team and in developing the kids because it saves them from the drugs in the streets and the also enjoy it because it takes them to competitions in Pretoria and Warmbaths where they run 5 Kilometer races,” Mr Mashishi said.
