Six families in Moretele Local Municipality have received new homes, thanks to a joint effort by the National Department of Human Settlements and the local municipality. This comes after devastating floods ravaged the area, claiming three lives and destroying homes, bridges, and road infrastructure.
According to Mothupi Malebye, Communication Manager at Moretele Communication Unit, the National Department of Human Settlements provided building materials to 97 families, while six families received newly built homes. The intervention also included the distribution of food parcels, toiletries, and bedding to affected families.
The speedy response by Moretele Local Municipality Mayor Clr Masango George and his team helped avert a catastrophic situation. The current beneficiaries are those affected by the floods in early January 2025. In February, the Moretele local municipality disaster management team compiled a list of affected families.
One of the families who benefited from the new homes is the Molokomme family from Tlholoe Village Ward 1. They were forced to live in a single room after their house collapsed. Mr Malebye praised the collaborative effort, saying it has relieved the affected families.
