HTC Tennis Club marked Youth Day with a vibrant celebration that brought together young players, parents and coaches for an afternoon of sport, creativity and reflection.

In keeping with its values, the club ensured that participants understood the historical significance of Youth Day and honoured the bravery of the young people who played a role in South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

The event opened with the Red, Orange, Green and Yellow Championship Challenge, where players competed in their respective age groups using colour-coded balls. The matches showcased impressive skill, focus and determination from the young athletes.

The sporting programme was followed by a lively performance of the iconic Sarafina! dance by the children, capturing the spirit of resistance and commemorating the events of June 16, 1976. Young talents also presented a heartfelt Youth Day poem and performed a short drama that highlighted the day’s meaning and importance, moving many in the audience.

Younger children took part in a drawing competition, while older participants tested their concentration and teamwork in a puzzle-solving challenge.

One of the day’s highlights was the energetic Colour Run Marathon, where participants raced through vibrant clouds of colour in different age categories. In the games competition, Boitumelo Molawa claimed top honours in the puzzle-solving challenge. In the Colour Run, Musa Baloyo won the under-10 boys’ category, along with other winners across various age groups.

The celebration concluded on a warm, communal note, with mealie meal, soya mince, and beans served to players and their families. Special appreciation was extended to Rethusagetse for consistently supporting and nourishing the club’s young athletes.

“The club always makes sure that players understand the reason for every holiday,” said Ms Makhoba.

Through sport and shared values, HTC Tennis Club continues to nurture well-rounded young people, strengthen community bonds and honour the country’s history.
