As South Africa commemorated Youth Day today, 16 June, young people were reminded that the legacy of 1976 must translate into action in addressing the country’s present-day challenges.

ActionSA Youth Forum Chairperson Olebogeng Ngoepe said Youth Day should not only be a moment of reflection on the bravery of the youth of 1976, but a renewed call for young people to take responsibility for shaping the country’s future.

He noted that unemployment, crime, substance abuse and deepening social inequality continue to disproportionately affect young people, making active youth participation more critical than ever.

“Youth Day must remind us that the responsibility to build a better South Africa rests with us,” said Ngoepe. “Young people must position themselves at the centre of the struggle for economic emancipation and take ownership of their communities.”

He emphasised that youth have historically been at the forefront of social and political transformation, arguing that the same courage and determination displayed during the liberation struggle are urgently needed today.

“If we are not involved in decision-making processes, we allow others to determine our future,” he said. “The power to influence change still lies with the youth.”

Ngoepe encouraged young people to become informed about issues affecting their communities and to participate meaningfully in civic processes that promote development, accountability and ethical leadership.

“The youth have the power. If we want to see change, we must challenge systems that are not working and help build a country future generations can be proud of,” he added.

To mark Youth Day, members of the ActionSA Youth Forum joined Temba community members in cleaning and maintaining the grave of anti-apartheid activist Monageng Mmakou. Wreaths were laid in his honour, reinforcing the importance of preserving local liberation history while inspiring active citizenship among today’s generation.
