The Green Army led a community cleaning campaign at the Kopanong Shopping Center, emphasizing the motto, “A clean environment is a healthy environment.” This initiative organised by Dimakatso Rakgetse, Maria Sithole, Mmaletsatsi Kgafela, Maria Hlongwane and Letta Tsoku, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a clean environment while actively engaging local stakeholders in the cleanup effort.
The campaign saw participation from various organizations, including the local taxi associations (TTA, MATA, SETA), which recognised that a cleaner environment directly benefits their businesses. The collaboration highlighted the collective responsibility of all community members to preserve their surroundings.
The event also garnered support from the Tshwane Metro Police, ensuring safety and order during the campaign. Local businesses contributed significantly, with Build It donating masks and gloves for volunteers, while Big Save provided hydration with a donation of water bottles.
In total, the campaign was a success, resulting in the collection of 244 plastic bags filled with litter from the shopping centre. The Department of Environmental Affairs and the City of Tshwane Municipality also participated, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Green Army expressed gratitude to all participants and supporters, reinforcing the message that a clean environment is crucial for community health and well-being. The event not only cleaned up the area but also promoted a sense of community responsibility towards environmental stewardship.
