Murder accused, Mr Sipho Boshomore (33), was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Moretele Magistrates’ court on Thursday, 20 February 2020 for murder.
The Investigating officer, Detective Constable Poo, stationed at Makapanstad Detectives, acted on information received about the whereabouts of the suspect and apprehended him two days later at his aunt’s house in Polokwane, Limpopo.
According to Detective Constable Poo, the suspect was linked through DNA tests that were done on the bloodstains which were found on his clothes and the shoe which was left at the crime scene.
Ms Maria Nkabinde, the Acting Spokesperson for Brits Cluster, said the sentencing emanates from an incident that took place on Tuesday, 18 December 2018, whereby at about 18:00 Lizzie Phaphudi (35) was standing in the street with a male friend a few meters from her place of residence at Lefatlheng Section, Mathibestad. They then decided to part ways. Subsequently, she was suddenly followed by the accused who was observing them from a close distance without them noticing and stabbed her on the upper body with a knife.
“The victim screamed for help and the friend rushed to rescue her. As the community converged to the scene to rescue the deceased, the suspect fled, leaving one shoe behind. She succumbed to the injuries sustained and died,” Ms Nkabinde said.
In addition, statements obtained from witnesses also played an instrumental role in the investigation.
“Detectives in Makapanstad are raising the plight of the most vulnerable inhabitants by ensuring that those perpetrating hideous crimes against women and children are uprooted from society,” said Ms Nkabinde.
