With the price of cellular data being high, the Tshwane free Wi-Fi is a convenience to residents of Temba, however, criminals has turned these Wi-Fi hotspots into crime hotspots as users become victim to criminals who rob them of gadgets such as cell phones, laptops and iPads.
One of the victims, Ms Gomolemo Lebombo, said she was mugged near Ratshepo High School. “We are grateful of the Tshwane free Wi-Fi but the downside is that it is no longer safe because criminals have now made the free Wi-Fi hotspots their target,” she said.
A student from Tshwane North College, Mr Godfrey Namane, said the free Wi-Fi helps students search for bursaries and jobs but students are now concerned about safety at free Wi-Fi hotspots.
A resident, Katlego Bopape, said students are resorting to safer areas such as the Temba Community Library where there is security to use the free wife.
Tshwane free Wi-Fi was introduced in 2014 to connect the majority of schools in Temba and municipality offices.
