Members of the community are hereby advised to apply the following safety tips as part of preventative measures.

Avoid displaying valuable items such as cellphones, jewelry, laptops  or cash in the view of  criminals. Activate your vehicle alarms and apply steering and paddle locks. Physically ensure that the vehicle doors are locked, especially when using a remote control. Be on the look-out for suspicious looking individuals  that are following you and park your vehicles in places that are well lit. If a stranger wants to talk to you while you are in  your vehicle, do not open the window wide, only five centimeters is enough to have a discussion.

How to avoid hijacking situations

Be familiar with your environment and be constantly on the look-out for suspicious looking  characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the Police. Know your destination and the directions to it, and be alert if you get lost. Ensure that your vehicle is always in good running condition with good tyres and adequate amount of fuel for your planned trip and ensure that your spare wheel is always inflated.

Lock all your doors and shut all your windows before driving off. When leaving your premises try to face the road and try not to reverse. Don’t talk on the cellphone while driving, as this will distract your attention. Constantly check your rear-mirror and side-view mirrors for anything suspicious. Be observant of suspicious vehicles. If you notice that you are being followed, drive to the nearest Police station.

Always park your car in a well-attended parking lot. If you will be working late into the night, plan well ahead and avoid deserted parking areas or arrange for someone to accompany you to your vehicle.

Always walk around your car and inspect it if you have parked somewhere else than at your home. Look for signs of tampering or break-in. Always alternate your route and travel schedules to and from work.

REMEMBER: Hijackers are professionals and they plan their attack carefully. Whenever possible, don’t travel alone after dark. When dropping off a passenger, make sure he or she is safely in his or her own vehicle or house before departing.

Never: Pick up hitchhikers
