The Hammanskraal Tennis Club has come out shining at the Tshwane Women in Sports Awards 2020 that took place on Thursday 19 November 2020.

Ms Mpho Makhoba of Hammanskraal won the Technical Official of the year with Jennifer Glatter and Margriet Bester as runner ups.

Ms Makhoba achievement for being a finalist and ultimate winner was due to her being the only female in Africa to obtain a Silver Badge Chief of Umpire Status under the joint certificate of the International Tennis Federation, Woman Tennis Association and Association of Tennis Professionals.

Ms Makhoba, who is also the deputy chairperson of the Hammanskraal Tennis Club is also the fourth person to obtain the badge, worldwide.

The Hammanskraal Tennis Club was also a finalist in the category of the Sports Club of the Year in a category that was won by the University of Pretoria Netball Club.

Lwanele Zondi of Hammanskraal Tennis club was also a finalist in the Schools Sports Athlete of the Year.

Hammanskraal Tennis Club was able to get to the finals of this award due to the recognition of the efforts of the club to give the community an opportunity to participate in continuous tennis training and school activities.

The awards committee also recognized the Club that In 2019, two players and a manager of the Hammanskraal Tennis Club were selected to represent Gauteng at the SA school championships and won a gold medal. Also, in 2020, two players of the Club qualified to play at the maiden BNP Paribas, Primary School Rising Star where one team member reached the semifinals.

In the Schools Sports Athlete Category, the nine-year-old Lwanele Zondi was recognized as a finalist for her winning position one a the Soweto Growthpoint Mini 1 Tournament, position two at Atteridgeville Growthpoint Mini 1, and position 1 at Soweto Growthpoint Mini 2 Tournament.

Lesedi Maluleke was acknowledged for winning the Club Championships, Maiden Woman’s Day Celebration Tournament and for the good participation and play at the GN Junior Grant Prix Tournament.

Chairperson of Hammanskraal Tennis Club, Mr Simon Tlhatlha, expressed gratitude to the organizers of the awards and for the recognition of women’s participation in sports.

“As Hammanskraal Tennis Club, we are grateful for the club’s achievements as well as achievements of individual club members.

“The members’ achievements, is a club achievement, we are hoping that these awards will motivate more women to take up sports and to excel in it,” Mr Tlhatlha said.
