The North West Water and Sanitation Intervention Steering Committee is set to launch ‘Operation Bulela Metsi’ on Saturday, 29 July 2023, in a bid to address the water and sanitation challenges experienced in the North West Province.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu, and the North West Acting Premier, Mr Nono Maloyi, will lead the launch in Mathibestad, Moretele Local Municipality as well as Tlhabane, Rustenburg Local Municipality, where they will unveil the projects currently underway in those areas.

The ‘Operation Bulela Metsi’ project is a result of the technical task team’s assessment of the state of water and sanitation services provision in the province. The team was established by the Minister and the Provincial Government in January 2023 to come up with measures to address the challenges and ensure sustainable provision of the services. The project is part of the identified short, medium, and long-term interventions aimed at guaranteeing the sustainable provision of water and sanitation services in the province.

The launch will be attended by Deputy Minister Judith Tshabalala, representatives from North West provincial and local government, the business fraternity, traditional leaders, and community structures from across the province. The event will also be an opportunity to showcase the hard work carried out by the Provincial Political and Steering Committee (PPSC) co-chaired by the Minister and North West Premier, which oversees water and sanitation services management in the Province.

The technical task team was established under the steering committee and is comprised of professional engineers from the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Magalies Water Board, as well as all districts and local municipalities, to assess, plan, and implement water and sanitation needs in the province.

The ‘Operation Bulela Metsi’ project launch is a significant step towards addressing water and sanitation challenges in the North West Province, and stakeholders are optimistic about the impact it will have on the communities.
