The Moretele Local Municipality in the North West Province is set to host a major youth sports tournament, aimed at curbing crime, gender-based violence, and substance abuse among young people. The event, scheduled for May 1, 2025, at the Lebotloane Sports Complex, is expected to draw thousands of attendees, particularly sports enthusiasts.
Mayor Masango George Manyike emphasized that the tournament is part of the municipality’s continued efforts to create a crime-free society. “We believe sports can be a powerful tool in bringing our youth together and providing a positive outlet for their energy and talent,” he said.
The Mayor highlighted the ability of sports to transcend cultural and racial divides, citing the 1930 FIFA World Cup as an example of how sports can promote peace and stability. He expressed hope that the tournament would bring renewed hope and focus to the rural communities in Moretele.
The launch event, starting at 9 am, is open to the public, and the media is invited to attend. Mayor Manyike’s initiative underscores the municipality’s commitment to addressing social issues and promoting unity through sports.
