The dearly department, Mrs Mabel Vuyelwa Mushi

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Temba on Saturday, 3 January 2026, to bid a dignified farewell to one of the community’s most respected matriarchs, Mrs Mabel Vuyelwa Mushi, whose life of service, faith, and compassion left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Born on 17 April 1944 in Krugersdorp, Mrs Mushi was the firstborn child of blind parents, Martha Margaret and Moses John Mpusha Gololo. Following her family’s relocation to Hammanskraal, she grew up as the eldest of ten siblings, a role that would shape her lifelong identity as a nurturer, leader, and pillar of strength.

She began her education at Temba Primary School and continued at Setotolwane High School, where she completed her Junior Certificate. Her professional journey started in healthcare as a nurse at HF Verwoerd Hospital, reflecting her deep commitment to caring for others. Together with her late husband, Mr Tom Mushi, she later ventured into entrepreneurship, co-managing Papatso African Craft, opening a café, and eventually establishing the first township black owned Refilwe Restaurant in Temba—an enterprise that became a familiar and cherished part of the local community. She later served diligently as a clerk at Pilot Furniture Manufacturing until her retirement.

In her final months, Mrs Mushi experienced periods of ill health that required several hospital visits. During this time, she faced her health challenges with great strength, patience, and dignity, surrounded by the love, prayers, and constant support of her family. Despite every effort and care, she passed away peacefully on 29 December 2025, bringing her life’s journey to a gentle close.

Mrs Mushi was a devoted wife, a loving mother to five children—Pontsho, Papi, Baja, Seun, and Meisie—and a treasured grandmother and great-grandmother to a large and loving family. She is also survived by her two brothers, Bishop and Walter, and her four sisters, Granny, Chono, Pammy, and Titi.

Beyond her family, Mrs Mushi was widely known as a community leader, philanthropist, Sunday school teacher, and devoted prayer warrior within the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (Temba Circuit). Her faith, gentle wisdom, and selfless service earned her deep respect far beyond Hammanskraal. While her funeral was attended by hundreds of community members from Hammanskraal and Temba, it was also attended by distinguished figures from outside the area. Notably, the legendary blind singer Babsy Mlangeni offered a musical tribute during the service, a powerful testament to the far‑reaching influence of Mrs Mushi’s life and character.

The funeral service unfolded with solemn grace, beginning at her home and continuing at church before proceeding to the Temba Graveyard. Tributes from family, friends, church representatives, and former colleagues painted a vivid portrait of a woman whose love was unconditional, whose counsel was wise, and whose presence brought comfort and hope. Messages from her children spoke of a mother who listened deeply, prayed fervently, and taught by example—leaving behind a legacy of emotional intelligence, compassion, and faith.

As one of the family’s celebratory statements echoed during the service, “Bana ba me, tshwaraganang!”—a call for unity that so perfectly captured Mrs Mushi’s life philosophy.

Mrs Mabel Vuyelwa Mushi passed away on 29 December 2025, but her spirit lives on in the lives she touched, the values she instilled, and the community she helped to build. She was laid to rest beside her late husband with honour, dignity, and profound gratitude from a community that knew her not only as a mother and grandmother, but as a guiding light.

Her legacy remains—the light continues to shine.
