The Hammanskraal Tennis Club has returned home after an unforgettable two‑week experience serving as ball kids at a prestigious ATP 50 tournament held at Irene Country Club in Centurion.

The high‑profile event, which is part of the ATP international calendar and serves as a key build‑up to the Grand Slams, attracted top tennis talent from around the world.

According to a club representative, Ms Mpho Makhoba, 20 children from Hammanskraal Tennis Club were selected to participate. The opportunity allowed the young ball kids to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best players while gaining invaluable exposure to professional tennis at the highest level.

The second week of the tournament proved especially memorable for both the club and South African tennis supporters. Local star Philip Henning, currently South Africa’s top‑ranked male player, clinched his first ATP title after a hard‑fought final, a moment that inspired many young fans in attendance.

“Philip Henning inspired lots of kids during this event and kept South Africa’s hopes alive,” said Coach Makhoba.

For the participating children, the experience went far beyond working courtside. It offered behind‑the‑scenes insight into professional tennis, elite-level discipline, and rare interaction with players they regard as role models.

To celebrate the achievement, the club is planning a special Youth Day event at the Mandela Sports Complex tennis courts. The celebration will honour the young participants and highlight the importance of youth development in sport. A detailed programme will be announced closer to the date.

The initiative highlights the growing tennis talent emerging from Hammanskraal and the broader importance of creating pathways for young players to access high‑level competition and international exposure.
