Hundreds of men gathered at Maubane Agrico Hall on June 27 for a Men’s Dialogue hosted by the North West Department of Health’s Moretele Health Sub-District.
The round-table discussion created an open and respectful platform for participants to share personal experiences, confront pressing challenges, and explore practical solutions to build healthier families and stronger communities. Discussions ranged from mental health and responsible fatherhood to HIV prevention and general wellness, with attendees engaging candidly throughout the session.
One of the organisers described the event as a significant step towards breaking the stigma and encouraging men to take active leadership roles in public health. A facilitator said the initiative aimed to encourage men to know their HIV status, access medical services and remain on treatment where necessary. He added that the dialogue also sought to understand why some men do not make use of available healthcare facilities.
The event was supported through partnerships with Moretele Local Municipality, The Aurum Institute, the Civil Society Forum, Tshela Ka Tekanelo, Close the Gap and the NDP. Community leaders described the gathering as a milestone in ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive and responsive health system in the North West.
Facilitators emphasised that the dialogue provided a safe space for men to openly discuss challenges affecting them, including depression, social pressures and experiences of feeling marginalised or bullied within their homes or communities. They reassured participants that the Department of Health offers support services to assist individuals facing such difficulties.Men
Organisers expressed optimism that the initiative would have a lasting positive impact, noting that empowering men to take responsibility for their health and leadership roles can strengthen communities as a whole.
Participants left the hall motivated and committed to continuing the conversation in their homes, workplaces and communities.
