The African National Congress today disrupted the Executive Mayor of Tshwane’s maiden State of the Capital Address at the Tshwane (SOCA) Events Centre resulting in the speech delivered at an alternative venue.

The ANC demanded that the Address be postponed due to the 38th anniversary of the execution of struggle hero, Solomon Mahlangu.

This request was denied by Council which resolved that the SoCA would continue as scheduled in honour of Solomon Mahlangu and the ideals he fought for to liberate our people from the throes of poverty and destitution.

Mayoral Spokesperson, Mr Samkelo Mgobozi, said ANC members responsible for the disruption will be dealt with appropriately pursuant to the rules of Council and the code of conduct of Councillors expressed in Schedule 1 of the Municipal Systems Act.

He said the City elected to proceed with the SoCA to demonstrate to the people of Tshwane where the City has come from and announce how better services will  be  deliver and provide opportunities so that citizens can live a better life as envisioned by Solomon Mahlangu and many other struggle heroes.

The Executive Mayor, Solly Msimanga, will pay tribute to Mr Mahlangu and set out his plans to give effect to his legacy to the people for whom he sacrificed his life as has always been the case when this decision was taken in September last year where the ANC in Council failed to register any dissenting vote.

He said the assertion by the ANC that this will desecrate the memory of Mr Mahlangu is bizarre. “In fact, it is they who seek to insult the memory of this great struggle hero who fought for our people to have a better life. One rooted in freedom, fairness and opportunity for all and not just for some”.
