Taxi strike call off, Hammanskraal commuters affected today

The Department of Transport said the taxi strike has been called off following an agreement between the South African National Taxi Association (Santaco) and SA Taxi Finance Holdings on Thursday.

The Taxi strike was about the price of the Quantum Minibus and interest rates on the purchases of these vehicles.

The strike affected Hammanskraal commuters today starting at Rampi Garage to Hammanskraal where they blocked R101 and the rest of the road to town towards N1.

No taxies where working in the early hours until at approximately 15:00 in the afternoon. From the morning taxis blocked roads with their mini buses preventing buses and cars to pass.

Commuters complained about the blockage of road by taxis drivers, Mr Kevin Laka and Mr James Mokone said the strike affected the wrong people in a bad way.

M Mokene who works in Centurion and could not go to work complained that his work conditions is on a no work no pay basis as such, he forfeited his salary for today.

“Those people are wrong and selfish, they only think of themselves, tomorrow they will be back at work while some of us will be without jobs,”he said.

Another commuter, Miss Naledi Motshegoa said the issues of the taxi industry should not affect passengers because commuters pay their fares every day.

Members of the Taxi Association were attending a meeting in Midrand but in the afternoon Taxis were back in operation.
