Two suspects who shot and killed Constable Chauke in 2014 were sentenced to 57 years in jail. They were sentenced at the Moretele Magistrate Court in Temba on Wednesday.

Constable Chauke was attending to a business robbery at Eersterus near Temba during the night at around 01:00.

On the day of his death, Constable Chauke and his partner, Constable Muhlanga, received information about a robbery in progress at a supermarket and on arrival, the place was quite without any movement around the shop. When the two policemen approached the door, about four suspects came out of the door shooting at the two policemen.

Constable Chauke was shot on the upper body and died on the scene and Constable Muhlanga survived the attack and called for backup.

The Crime Intelligence Unit managed to arrest the suspects within eight months. It is alleged that one of the suspects died in Soshanguve and two were detained.

The cluster commander of Tshwane north, Major General Hilder Mohajane, and the station commander of Temba Police, Brigadier Dibetle, welcomed the sentence and applauded the members who cracked the case and made the conviction.

Major General Mohajane said this is a good example to criminals who think they can kill the police and get away with it.
