Hundreds of community members from Kekana gardens marched to the City of Tshwane regional offices in Temba on 02 March 2018 to handover a memorandum of complains about poor service delivery in the area.
The march was organised by the Bakone Safety Forum from Kekana gardens led by Mr Bull Hlopho, who says they are demanding service delivery in their community because they were promised services since 2007.
“We do not have water, proper roads, the sewage system is not operating because we do not have water, but our water bills are high.
“Criminals are looting material at the water plant project that has failed and we have unfinished government house projects that we want finished.”
Mr Hlopho said the community was protesting because the City promised to meet them on 01 March 2018 but never turned up.
The community, young and old, marched an estimated 15 kilometres escorted by the Metro police demanding accountability for the lack of service delivery that they say they waited for in the last 10 years.
Mr David Mathekga, one of the protesters, said he pays R100 to fill up his water tank because the officials are corrupt and sell them water while it is supposed to be free. He said they are always sick because of the dust from the gravel roads.
Ms Dikeledi Selowa, Utility Services P Srtfolio Chairperson of section 79 oversight committee received the memorandum and promised to forward it to relevant departments and said while she is receiving the memorandum, she does not promise that the community concerns will be solved immediately.
The community has given the City 7 days to respond or else they will close the N1 freeway with stones until their demands are met.
Ms Selowa however promised to give the community feedback within seven days.
