Mahikeng, 27 May 2025 – Acting Premier Kenetswe Mosenogi, on behalf of the Provincial Government and the people of North West, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of renowned actor Presley Chweneyagae, who has tragically passed away.
It is still unclear how the actor from Mmabatho lost his life. City Press reported that a voice note from a family member, identifying himself as Chweneyagae’s nephew, confirmed the news. The family learned of his passing around 3 AM on Tuesday. “I want to inform you about my nephew, Presley Chweneyagae’s death. I received a call around 3 AM. I will share the details as soon as they come in. We are heading to bed now. Thank you. May his soul rest in peace,” the family member stated.
Acting Premier Mosenogi described Chweneyagae as not only a talented actor but also a cultural icon whose contributions to South Africa’s arts and entertainment landscape will be remembered for years to come.
“He was a proud product of the North West Province, honing his craft at Mmabana Mahikeng, where his passion for performance flourished. His remarkable roles in acclaimed works such as Tsotsi, for which he received an Academy Award, and his unforgettable performance in The Wild showcased his extraordinary talent and dedication,” said Acting Premier Mosenogi.
“This tragic loss leaves a void in our hearts and in the industry he loved so dearly. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy of creativity and passion he gifted to us all. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time,” the Acting Premier added.
Premier’s spokesperson, Mr. Sello Tatai, stated that the North West Provincial Government will collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure a dignified send-off for Presley Chweneyagae, honoring his immense contributions to South Africa’s cultural and arts heritage.

Chweneyagae was named after his mother’s favourite singer, Elvis Presley.
