A 14-year-old chess prodigy from Temba, Gomolemo Mosiane, has secured his place among the 21 learners who will represent Gauteng Province at the National School Chess Championships, scheduled for 27–28 September 2025 in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal.

Both Sikhululekile Maths and ICT School of Specialization (U-15 and U-17 categories) and Prestige College (U-19 category), located in Hammanskraal, qualified for the nationals after finishing in the top two positions at the Gauteng Provincial Chess Tournament held on 30 August 2025 in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.

Gomolemo began his chess journey in Grade 7 at Mosaledi Primary School, inspired by a teacher’s assistant who introduced him to the game. What started as simple curiosity quickly blossomed into a deep passion, and he soon emerged as the top chess player at his primary school.

Upon joining Sikhululekile Maths and ICT School of Specialization, Gomolemo sought out the school’s chess club, guided by Sir Mabitja. Despite the lack of a formal coach, Gomolemo sharpened his skills through self-study—reading chess books, watching online tutorials, and challenging computer opponents. His hard work and dedication ultimately earned him a spot on the U-15 and U-17 teams, which successfully advanced through Cluster and District levels to qualify for the provincial championships.

“This achievement proves that with determination, talent can thrive anywhere—even without formal coaching. We are proud of our learners who will represent Gauteng and showcase the talent of Hammanskraal on a national stage,” said a mentor from the Temba Community Chess Club.

“We are excited to see our youth from Hammanskraal fly the Gauteng flag high. Chess is more than just a game; it teaches discipline, focus, and problem-solving skills that prepare our students for life beyond school,” added Pathwayz Development representative.
